Who needs to purchase a highway vignette in the Slovak Republic?
In Slovakia, an electronic highway vignette (e-vignette) is mandatory for all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes (M1, N1 and their subcategories), including motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes, if they use toll sections of highways and expressways.
Motorcycles do not need a highway vignette. Trailer: If the total weight of the vehicle combination (vehicle + trailer) exceeds 3.5 tonnes, it is necessary to have an e-vignette also for the trailer (categories O1, O2).
Without email confirmation of the vignette validity, it is not recommended to use toll roads. Otherwise, there is a risk of a fine.

Inspection and fines
The Slovakian Police Force, based on the vehicle registration number (EČV), will determine whether you have a valid Slovak electronic highway vignette or if your vehicle is exempt from payment. Checks are conducted directly on toll sections of highways, using patrol vehicles equipped with a camera system for EČV recognition, through control gates, or during random checks at rest stops and parking lots.
It is advisable to regularly verify the validity of the electronic vignette. If the system detects a vehicle without a valid electronic highway vignette (and the vehicle is not exempt), the driver may face a fine in the range of hundreds of euros. Control units also investigate cases of exemption misuse: if an individual or legal entity reports exemption unjustly to avoid payment, they may also face a high penalty. Drivers of vehicles that are eligible for exemption but fail to declare it in accordance with the law also risk a fine. It is a legal obligation to report if the reason for exemption no longer applies - otherwise, penalties may apply in this case as well.
What happens with the collected information and photographs? As soon as the system records the EČV and determines that the electronic highway vignette has not been paid, a photograph of the vehicle is also taken. Subsequently, the software immediately separates the image into the actual photograph and associated data. Only this data, stored in the central control system, is then sent for further processing.
