Network of defined sections of highways and expressways

The Slovak Republic has an extensive system of highways and expressways, which is defined and regulated in accordance with Act No. 488/2013 Coll. on the motorway vignette and amending certain laws in force (hereinafter referred to as "Act No. 488/2013 Coll. on the motorway vignette in force" or "Act"). This network, referred to as "designated road sections," is accessible to the public upon payment of the relevant motorway vignette.

Characteristics of defined sections

Defined road sections include highways and expressways, which are important transport arteries connecting various regions of Slovakia and providing high-capacity connections between major cities and international transit routes. The total length of these sections is approximately 622 kilometers, with highways divided into routes D1, D2, D3, and D4, while expressways are designated as R1, R2, R4, and R6.

Labeling and usage

Each defined section is marked with the relevant traffic signs that clearly identify the right to use these sections only for vehicles with a valid highway vignette. These signs are placed at the beginnings and ends of highways and expressways, as well as at intersections and exits, to clearly inform drivers of the obligation to pay a fee for using these roads.

The importance of defined sections

Designated road sections play a key role in the national infrastructure. They enable fast and efficient movement of people and goods, thus promoting economic development and integrating Slovakia into the European transport network. For example, highways D1 and D2 form the main routes between the eastern and western parts of the country, as well as between the north and south, providing connections to international border crossings.

Network maintenance and development

Managing and maintaining this network is a key task to ensure safety and comfort for passengers. Regular maintenance includes surface repairs, maintenance of markings and traffic devices, as well as the development of new sections and the modernization of existing ones. All with the aim of ensuring that the network of designated sections meets the highest standards of safety and quality.

In accordance with the law and relevant regulations, the use of these sections is subject to payment of a motorway vignette, which provides the financial resources needed for the maintenance and development of this critical infrastructure. This guarantees that the road network will continue to serve its purpose and contribute to the economic and social development of the Slovak Republic.
