Inspection and fines

The Slovak Police Force, based on the vehicle registration number (EČV), will determine whether you have a valid Slovak electronic highway vignette or whether your vehicle is exempt from payment. Controls take place directly on toll sections of highways, using patrol vehicles equipped with a camera system for recognizing EČVs, through control gates, or during random checks at rest areas and parking lots.

It is advisable to regularly verify the validity of the electronic vignette. If the system detects a vehicle without a valid electronic highway vignette (and the vehicle is not exempt), the driver may face a fine in the hundreds of euros range. Control units also investigate cases of misuse of exemptions: if an individual or legal entity falsely reports an exemption to avoid payment, they may also face a high penalty. Drivers of vehicles that are eligible for exemption but fail to report it in accordance with the law also risk a fine. It is also a legal obligation to report if the reason for exemption no longer applies - otherwise, sanctions may apply in this case as well.

What happens with the obtained information and photographs? When the system records the EČV and determines that the electronic highway vignette has not been paid for, a photograph of the vehicle is also taken. The software then immediately divides the image into the actual photograph and associated data. Only this data, stored in the central control system, is then sent for further processing.
